Defense: take the attacker
If one of your pieces is under attack, you will want to defend it.You can defend a piece by moving it or by protecting it.
But sometimes the best way of defending is by simply capturing the attacker!
Now, study the example.
What do you have to do?
Defend a piece by capturing the attacker.
The rook is in under attack from Black’s bishop.
The fact that the rook is protected doesn’t really help White.
White will lose a rook (5 points) to a bishop (3 point), losing 2 points in this exchange.
In this situation, protection isn’t enough. And the rook cannot flee to a safe square, either.
So how can White save his rook?
By taking the attacker! The white knight captures the rook.
Black will take back, but that is not so bad.
A knight and a bishop have the same value.
This is an equal exchange and White still has his precious rook.
